Fall Furnace Maintenance

05 Oct Fall Furnace Maintenance

A furnace needs to be maintained each and every year. Your home’s furnace is just like any other appliance in your home, in that it will operate much more efficiently and reliably with a little yearly tune-up. You don’t want to end up with a broke-down furnace in the middle of winter. So, schedule a maintenance appointment. A maintenance appointment isn’t an overhaul, and it’s not overly expensive, and it doesn’t take hours to do. But it does, hopefully, mean that your furnace will operate smoothly throughout the winter: a complete furnace breakdown is costly. Some furnaces may even be in such a poor operating condition that they may leak carbon monoxide. (Basically, remember the old adage: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.)

What Happens at an Appointment

So, a professional furnace technician from Expert Heating will arrive at your home. They will inspect your furnace. They will check it for leaks, and check all the connections (there are different types of furnaces). They will clean certain operational parts of the furnace, making sure that everything is working as it should. If there’s anything that needs to be fixed, or if they notice that something in the furnace may break soon, they will repair or replace it—ounce of prevention.

Seasonal Maintenance

There are several things that you can do to keep your furnace operating efficiently throughout the winter season. First, make sure that you always have a clean furnace filter in place. Replace the filter every two months, although you may want to change it more frequently if you have pets. Also, you can check the flames from the burners. The flames should be even, and there should be a tint (blame flame). If the flame flickers often, and it burns more bright yellow, it is likely that your furnace’s burners are dirty, and you should again call in a technician to inspect your furnace.
